As paper manufacturers continue to improve production efficiency while reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs, pressure screening has become one of the most important operations in modern stock preparation systems.
Although pressure screens are widely used throughout pulp processing lines, many mills still focus primarily on equipment capacity while overlooking one of the most influential factors affecting screening performance—the selection of the correct screen basket slot size.
An improperly selected slot opening may lead to excessive fiber loss, reduced screening efficiency, unstable reject rates, increased maintenance frequency and inconsistent paper quality. By contrast, an optimized screen basket can significantly improve contaminant removal, stabilize stock quality and extend equipment service life.
Pressure screens operate by combining hydraulic pressure with rotor-generated pulsation. Under continuous operating pressure, acceptable fibers pass through precisely machined screen slots, while contaminants such as shives, plastics, stickies and coarse particles remain inside the screening chamber before being discharged through the reject outlet. At the same time, pressure pulses created by the rotor continuously clean the screen basket surface, helping maintain stable production without frequent shutdowns.
Selecting the appropriate slot width depends largely on the screening duty within the production process.

For primary screening applications where production capacity is the highest priority, larger slot openings are commonly adopted to remove oversized contaminants while protecting downstream equipment.
For secondary and fine screening, narrower slots provide more effective removal of smaller impurities and fiber bundles, resulting in cleaner pulp and improved paper quality.
In approach flow systems immediately upstream of the headbox, finer slotted baskets are generally recommended to ensure consistent stock quality, excellent sheet formation and reliable paper machine operation.
However, slot size alone should never determine screen basket selection. Furnish composition, fiber length distribution, production capacity, target paper grade, operating consistency and pressure screen configuration should all be evaluated together when designing an efficient screening system.
